Lasik Eye Surgery

LASIK In Harrisburg (Rocky River), Charlotte, And Davidson

LASIK surgery is a laser procedure that gently reshapes your cornea to correct refractive error. LASIK corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Before you can have the procedure performed, a consultation with an optometrist is needed. University Eye Associates provides the appropriate pre-surgery eye examination and we have locations in Harrisburg (Rocky River), Charlotte, and Davidson. During your consultation visit, our eye doctors can determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK, and will share what you can expect from the procedure.

Factors That Determine If You Are Good Candidate

Certain factors can either qualify you or disqualify you for LASIK surgery. These include:

  • Prescription: Your prescription has a lot to do with whether you are a good candidate for LASIK. LASIK can correct up to 6.00 diopters for astigmatism, +6.00 diopters for hyperopia, and -12.00 diopters for myopia.
  • Eye Health: Your eyes should be healthy and free of disease, and your vision must be stable for at least two years to be a good candidate for LASIK. If you have glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or dry eye syndrome, LASIK surgery may not be right for you.
  • Overall Health: If you have diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or an autoimmune disease, you would not be a good candidate. If you are taking any medications that can delay healing, or are pregnant or nursing, you would not be able to have LASIK surgery.

What to Expect and Restrictions

During your surgery, your eye surgeon will use a laser to create a flap in your cornea. That flap will then be peeled back so that your doctor can use another laser to reshape the corneal tissue. The actual procedure takes about 10 minutes per eye, and you will be under anesthesia.

Immediately after the procedure, your vision will be very blurry. Your eye doctor will suggest that you go home and sleep. You should avoid reading, using the computer, or performing any close-up work or strenuous activity for a few days. You should also wait seven days before swimming in a chlorinated pool or going in a hot tub. You should wait thirty days before swimming in a natural body of water as well.
