Pink Eye FAQs

Pink Eye FAQs From Our Eye Doctors In Charlotte and Davidson

Pink eye, also referred to as conjunctivitis, is a condition that we treat at University Eye Associates. Our patients often have questions regarding this condition, as outlined below. Here are some of the most frequent questions and answers about pink eye, answered by our optometrists.

What is Pink Eye?

Pink eye occurs due to an inflammation of the transparent lining of your eyes called the conjunctiva. As a result, the blood vessels throughout the eyes will dilate, resulting in the pink color of the eye.

What Causes Pink Eye?

Viruses, bacteria, or allergens typically cause pink eye (conjunctivitis). Viral conjunctivitis is very contagious, while bacterial infections can have a detrimental effect on your eyesight. Pollen, dust, or pet dander are allergens that can cause this condition as well.

What Are the Symptoms of Pink Eye?

The symptoms of this condition are easy to notice. If you have any of the following symptoms, make an appointment with our eye doctors right away.

  • redness throughout the eyes and eyelids
  • watering and discharge
  • swollen eyelids or crusting
  • excessive dryness and irritation

What Are the Treatments for Pink Eye?

Our optometrists will recommend a treatment plan that is designed to improve your specific type of pink eye. Viral conjunctivitis will take a few days to clear up. Still, it would be best if you avoid contact with other people. You can use a wet cloth (compress) to help with the discomfort. Either eye drops or ointments can be used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis.

Can Pink Eye Be Avoided?

Always use best practices to limit the spread of any infection. These include washing your hands often, cleaning high traffic surfaces, and avoiding touching your eyes whenever possible.
