Astigmatism FAQs

Astigmatism FAQs from Our Optometrists

Suffering from poor vision can be frightening, especially when you have no idea what is going on. While there are several various vision problems, astigmatism is known to impact around one-third of Americans. Our team at University Eye Associates has gathered some frequently asked questions regarding astigmatism and your vision.

What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism sounds like a complicated and scary word, but it does not have to be. Astigmatism simply means that your cornea or lens is an irregular shape and, therefore, does not allow the light that enters your eye to focus correctly. This condition causes blurry vision.

What Causes It?

Astigmatism is most often present from birth, even if you do not experience the full effects until later. Sometimes it is caused by an eye injury or surgery. Some cases of astigmatism are due to other eye conditions like keratoconus.

What Are the Symptoms of Astigmatism?

One of the most prominent symptoms is constant blurry vision. Nearsightedness and farsightedness only occur within certain distances. Astigmatism means that your vision is blurry regardless of how close or far away an object is. In addition to blurred vision, astigmatism causes headaches, fatigue, and discomfort of the eye. This is because the eyes are overcompensating for the inability to see clearly, which typically results in a lot of squinting and tension headaches.

How is Astigmatism Diagnosed?

Our optometrists can determine if you have astigmatism through a comprehensive eye exam which does the following:

  • Determines the distance from which you can see clearly by having you read from a chart
  • Measures the curvature of your cornea by focusing a circle of light on it
  • Measures how your lenses focus that light

Can Astigmatism Be Treated?

You can treat your astigmatism through the use of prescription glasses, contact lenses, or LASIK surgery. Our optometrists can help you determine which is the best option for you.
