How to Prepare For An Eye Exam

How to Prepare for An Eye Exam

It is important to schedule an eye exam once a year since ocular health, prescriptions and vision can frequently change. There are certain ocular and/or systemic diseases that can occur without symptoms. Annual exams can help prevent or catch changes early. At University Eye Associates in University, Davidson, and Harrisburg(Rocky River), NC, our doctors are experienced in providing comprehensive eye exams for all ages.

What Happens During A Routine Eye Exam?

To allow for a smooth and efficient eye exam, having your previous glasses or contact lens prescription is extremely helpful. Our doctors of optometry will conduct a thorough examination which includes a visual acuity test to determine how clear your vision is, ocular alignment, peripheral field screening, binocular vision (how well your eyes work together), color vision, depth perception, and an ocular health assessment. The ocular health assessment can be completed by dilation and/or fundus photos. Depending on the evaluation, more testing may be necessary to ensure a proper diagnosis and treatment is initiated.

Types of Eye Tests

There are several different types of tests that are done throughout a comprehensive eye exam to determine the health of the eyes. A cover test helps determine the ocular alignment and can detect an eye turn (crossed or lazy eye.) Stereopsis is a way to measure depth perception and will also be evaluated during a new comprehensive eye exam. The microscope, also known as a slit lamp, is used to look at the health of the ocular surface and inside the eye. This allows for proper assessment of the back of the eye where diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetes, high blood pressure, cataracts, and glaucoma can develop. Depending on the assessment, if there is a concern for peripheral vision, a more extensive visual field test can help map out the details of someone’s vision.

Protect Your Eye Health with Annual Eye Exams

There are several eye conditions that can occur that do not have symptoms; therefore, it is important to ensure your eyes are growing and developing properly. Do not let your eyes and vision potentially suffer permanent damage due to skipping out on eye exams.
