Family Eye care

Family eye care is crucial for maintaining clear vision and optimal eye health for your entire family. A family optometrist offers routine comprehensive eye exams, eye care treatments, and recommendations for procedures, such as LASIK, for all age groups. Our team of optometrists at University Eye Associates provides primary eye care services for families in Charlotte, Harrisburg (Rocky River), and Davidson.

What does family eye care with an optometrist involve?

Our eyes play a vital role in our overall health and wellness, making it just as important to see a family optometrist as it is to see a family medical practitioner. Regular eye exams play an important role in maintaining good vision, helping children succeed in school, and  identifying and managing any developing  conditions. Optometrists can detect various eye and systemic conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancers during routine eye exams.

What are the benefits of family eye care with an optometrist?

Family eye care specialists offer extensive and comprehensive eye exams and visual treatments for the entire family. When an optometrist knows the family's ocular history, they can identify who may be at risk of developing genetic eye conditions. Moreover, the eye doctor can provide guidance on preventative care to help possibly reduce the risk of certain eye conditions by fostering healthy habits that the whole family can work on together.

A family optometrist can detect eye conditions early during routine comprehensive eye exams, provide vision therapy for children with underlying eye problems, and prescribe vision correction options, like eyeglasses or contact lenses.

How often should my family see an optometrist?

According to the American Optometric Association, frequency of comprehensive eye exams is dependent upon age, vision symptoms, and associated risk factors –such as systemic conditions or a family history of eye conditions. From birth through two years of age, it is recommended to have an examination at 6 months and 12 months of age. An examination should be completed at least once between the ages of 3 through 5. From ages 6 through 12, it is recommended to have an eye exam before the first year of school, then annually thereafter. For low-risk adults ages 18 through 64, it is recommended to have an eye exam at least once every two. At risk patients, or those who are 65 and older, should have an eye exam yearly, or as recommended by the optometrist.
