At University Eye Associates, we work closely with you to ensure you always have access to the best resources to protect your vision. A key part of that is providing you with access to quality and stylish sunglasses. Many people view sunglasses as a fashion statement or an optional item. However, with the intense sun, even a small amount of exposure can pose risks of damage to your eye health and vision. When you visit our optometrist in Charlotte, Harrisburg and Davidson, we'll provide you with one-on-one care to get the best sun protection for your vision using sunglasses.

Why Are Sunglasses So Important?

Any time you spend any amount of time outdoors, driving, or in intense light situations (such as on a watercraft or outdoors in the snow) it is important to wear sunglasses. The sun's ultraviolet, or UV, rays are very damaging to the eyes. You may know that UV rays damage the skin. The eyes are just as vulnerable, if not more so. When the eyes are exposed to high amounts of UV radiation even over a short amount of time, this can create photokeratitis. This is a type of damage that's much like sunburn on the skin. You may have symptoms such as:

  • Redness
  • A feeling of something gritty being in the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Excessive tearing
  • The feeling of something being stuck in your eyes

If you have any of these symptoms, contact our team right away to discuss potential treatment options available to you.

How You Can Avoid UV Ray Damage

There are several steps you can take to reduce the risk of this type of damage. The first is to wear high-quality sunglasses that offer the protection your eyes need. That is, look for sunglasses that offer the following benefits:

  • They need to block out UV-A and UV-B radiation at a level of 99 to 100 percent.
  • The sunglasses need to screen between 75 and 90 percent of visible light from your eyes.
  • You'll need lenses that are perfectly matched in terms of color. They also need to be free from any distortion or imperfection.
  • It's also important to consider polarized lenses. While these lenses reduce glare, they increase visual clarity and comfort. They make images appear sharper.

Many of these factors play a big role in the overall level of protection the sunglasses can offer to your eyes. Investing in a high-quality product can be invaluable. When you come in to see our team, we'll work with you to ensure you always have access to the best products available.
