Myopia Control in Kids

Pediatric Optometry Care for Myopia

Is your child squinting or tilting his head to see the television? Does he sit closer to the screen or the classroom board in order to see better? Is he unable to distinguish objects that are far away? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, your child may have myopia. Myopia is a condition that is known to affect children. Here at University Eye Associates, our optometrists in Charlotte and Davidson wants you to know that there are pediatric optometry services that can help control myopia if your child has it.

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a common vision condition that affects your child’s ability to see distant objects clearly. It happens when light rays focus in front of the retina instead of on the retina. Myopia is very common in young children and adolescents and tends to run in families who have this condition.

Eye Doctors’ Recommendations for Controlling Myopia

Given that myopia can be hereditary, our eye doctors can help your child improve his vision with some of the most recommended myopia control therapies.

Medicine: Atropine is eye drop medication that can slow the progression of myopia. It is applied only once a day and can be used as long as your child has myopia.

Multifocal Eyeglasses: For children who are too young to wear contacts or use atropine drops, they can wear multifocal glasses to improve their near and distance vision.

Orthokeratology: Also known as ortho-k lenses, these unique contact lenses are worn at night when sleeping and then removed first thing in the morning. Ortho-k gently reshapes the cornea so that the effects of myopia are reduced during the day.
