Signs of Vision Loss

Detecting Signs of Vision Loss

Vision loss is a serious problem and means that a previously sighted person may have to make significant adjustments to their daily lives. That is why it's so important to identify signs of vision loss while problems are still treatable. Early detection is the key to preserving your vision for as long as possible. Make an annual visit to an optometrist at University Eye Associates, in Davidson or Charlotte, to detect any signs of vision loss.

Visit a Doctor of Optometry to Be Screened for Glaucoma and Other Problems

Many conditions can result in vision loss. Examples of these conditions include: glaucoma, macular degeneration, a torn or damaged retina, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. Glaucoma can be undetected for the patient during the first stages of the disease. An eye doctor conducts a painless pressure test to detect glaucoma. Anyone is susceptible to glaucoma regardless of age. No cure exists for glaucoma, but once it is detected, proper treatment can preserve vision.

Other health and eye conditions may weaken your vision. Tunnel vision, loss of peripheral vision, and floaters are all reasons for concern. Floaters appear as black dots or delicate spiderwebs floating in your field of view. If you notice any of the scenarios listed above, do not wait for your annual exam. A change in your vision may occur slowly, without your realizing.
