Signs Your Child May Have Vision Problems

Identifying and correcting your child's vision problem as soon as possible can have a major positive impact. At University Eye Associates in Charlotte and Davidson, NC, we see firsthand how proper vision can significantly change a child’s life for the better. Sometimes, it can be challenging to recognize when a child is having a vision issue. Parents should be on the lookout for the following signs and schedule a visit with an optometrist if they notice them.

Signs That Your Child Should See an Optometrist

Not every child will tell you if he can't see well, but the child will definitely let you know by his behavior. Five of the most common indications of poor eyesight include the following:

1. Constant squinting.

If you notice your child scrunching his eyes when looking at things in the distance, he may be suffering from nearsightedness. Squinting can make it easier for him to see, but not as well as a pair of glasses.

2. Poor motor skills.

Some young children don't have the best balance; after all, they are called toddlers for a reason. When a child continually walks into walls or misjudges the sides of a doorway, there is a pretty good chance he needs vision correction.

3. Difficulty concentrating.

When a young child seems to lose focus when reading, it may not be boredom that distracts him. Children with farsightedness can see things correctly when they are further away, but everything is blurry when doing tasks up close.

4. Headaches or eye pain.

Frequent complaints of headaches or eye pain is a sign to schedule an appointment with one of our eye doctors. It may only indicate the need for corrective lenses in most cases, but it may be a sign of a more severe medical issue in some instances.

5. Covering one eye.

A child who is continuously using his hand to cover the same eye, especially when concentrating on something, may indicate that the child is suffering from a lazy eye. Lazy eye is a term used when one eye is significantly stronger than the other.
