Early Symptoms of Macular Dystrophy

Early Symptoms of Macular Dystrophy

Macular Dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases that affects the retina. Patients with macular dystrophy may experience progressive vision loss in both eyes.
If you happen to experience any symptoms of the disorder, visit us at University Eye Associates in Charlotte, NC so we can assess the health of your eyes.

What Is Macular Dystrophy?

Macular Dystrophy is caused by a genetic mutation that results in cellular damage in the macula. The macula is located centrally in the retina and is responsible for our central and color vision. There are two major categories of macular dystrophy –one that appears in early childhood and second later in life. The exact cause of these conditions is not yet fully understood.

Symptoms of Macular Dystrophy

Symptoms may vary among individuals, but some of the most common signs of Macular Dystrophy include:

  • Blurry central vision
  • Seeing bent or wavy lines
  • Distortion of colors and shapes

Typically, these symptoms are only present when you are looking directly at something. Macular dystrophy doesn’t typically affect peripheral vision.

Managing Macular Dystrophy

There is currently no treatment or cure for Macular Dystrophy at this time. However, proper diagnosis can help you understand your risk for progressive vision loss, as not all forms are. In addition, knowing which type of Macular Dystrophy you have can assist in family planning and understanding the risk of passing down the condition.
