Hard To Fit Contacts vs Regular Contacts

If you want to wear contacts, but have an eye health condition, you may be hard to fit for contacts. This does not mean that you cannot wear contacts. There are many different specialty contact lenses that you can wear. At University Eye Associates, serving Charlotte and Davidson, NC, our optometrist provides hard to fit contacts for patients with special conditions. We want to ensure that your vision is at its best.

Hard to Fit Conditions

There are many different eye conditions that require specialty contacts. Our eye doctor will determine which lenses are best for your specific condition. Here are some of the most common:

  • Astigmatism — This term refers specifically to the shape of the eye. If the reason for needing contacts is astigmatism, you will need specialized contacts to correct the variations in the shape.
  • Dry Eyes — People with chronic dry eyes often require special contacts that have less contact with the cornea.
  • Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis — This type of conjunctivitis can be caused by a reaction to contacts against the eyelid. Specialized contacts and great care with cleaning may help.
  • Keratoconus — This refers to an eye that is cone-shaped. Special contact lenses called scleral lenses will rest on the white part of the eyes, not the cornea, to adapt to this shape.
  • Presbyopia — Also referred to as age-related farsightedness, this condition can be helped with specialized contacts that take the reduced elasticity of the eye into consideration.

Getting the Right Contacts

Our optometrist will perform an eye exam to determine if you need specialty contacts. If so, we will measure your cornea and determine your prescription. Our eye doctor may have you try several contacts lenses to see if they work with your eye condition and correct your vision.
