Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. Unfortunately, few people know about it until it’s too late. Glaucoma is a condition that can damage your eyes silently. Before you know it, you have lost a portion of your vision, thus the nickname “the silent thief of sight.”

Glaucoma is treatable with prompt diagnosis. Regular eye exams are crucial for detecting and treating this condition. Educating yourself about glaucoma is also a good idea since you can take a more proactive approach to your eye health. Our optometrists at University Eye Associates provide quality eye care services for patients affected by glaucoma. Schedule your eye exam with us today if you live in or around Charlotte, Harrisburg (Rocky River), and Davidson, NC.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye condition that results in cumulative damage to the optic nerve due to pressure build-up in the eye. The optic nerve transmits signals from your retina to the brain. When the nerve is damaged, vision loss occurs.

The Causes of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is caused by excess fluid build-up when there is a problem with your eye’s drainage system. When the fluid build-up increases, your eye pressure compresses the optic nerve, which becomes damaged over time. Some of the factors that play a role in fluid build-up include:

  • certain medications
  • reduced or poor blood flow to the optic nerve
  • dilating eye drops
  • high blood pressure
  • eye injuries

The Symptoms of Glaucoma

Glaucoma will hardly show any signs until it is too late. However, it is associated with certain symptoms depending on the type and stage. These symptoms include:

  • patchy blind spots
  • tunnel vision
  • blurred vision
  • severe eye pain
  • severe headaches
  • eye redness
  • nausea and vomiting
  • vision disturbances

Glaucoma Treatment

While glaucoma is irreversible, treatment can reduce the progression and prevent vision loss. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment options include:

  • oral medication
  • eye drops
  • laser treatment or surgery
