The Early Signs of Glaucoma

glaucoma

When you need to see an optometrist to be tested for glaucoma, contact University Eye Associates to schedule an appointment. We serve the Charlotte, Davidson, and Harrisburg (Rocky River) areas.

The Basics of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve. Everyone's eyes have fluid in them called aqueous humor. When this fluid does not drain properly and builds up, it can cause the eye pressure to increase. When this happens, patients may develop glaucoma.

Glaucoma can cause irreversible vision loss and even lead to blindness. An optometrist can often slow or stop the progression of the disease with treatment. Therefore, it is important for glaucoma to be diagnosed early so that you can receive proper care.

Early Signs of Glaucoma

There are many different types of glaucoma. Two major categories are: open angle and angle closure glaucoma. Open angle glaucoma is considered a “silent” condition for its lack of early signs. As the disease progresses, loss of peripheral vision is typically the first sign patients note. Early signs of angle closure glaucoma include: eye pain, halos around lights, nausea, eye redness, headaches and blurry vision.
